When shelter staff noticed adopters repeatedly bringing back a charismatic pup, one man’s temporary fostering plan evolved into something much more meaningful.
Two rescue dogs, Abe and Abbi, made their way from Puerto Rico to a New York shelter in search of their forever homes. While Abbi quickly found her match, her brother Abe’s path proved more challenging.
Initially, things looked promising when a shelter employee welcomed Abe into their home, according to John Handem Piette, a senior editor at The Dodo. However, the celebration was short-lived as Abe soon returned to familiar shelter faces. His infectious personality made him a favorite among the other shelter dogs, leaving staff puzzled about why he couldn’t seem to find his perfect match. After another adoption attempt two weeks later, history repeated itself within a month.
That’s when John and his girlfriend stepped in, renaming the spirited pup Bean and committing to making it work. John learned that Bean’s previous returns stemmed from his energetic nature and behavioral challenges.
True to form, Bean made his presence known immediately – tugging at his leash, pursuing birds, and showing a particular interest in redecorating through the destruction of his bed and footwear. Nevertheless, the couple remained dedicated to working with Bean’s lively personality.
During the pandemic’s onset, Bean relocated to John’s parents’ residence, where he experienced his first snowfall and discovered the joys of swimming. The household’s resident cats, Simba and Tigger, provided new dynamics – while Tigger embraced Bean’s playful energy, Simba maintained a more cautious approach.
The move proved transformative for everyone involved. Bean settled into his new environment seamlessly, leading the couple to make their temporary arrangement permanent. Their patience and dedication had paid off, turning what began as a challenging situation into a heartwarming success story.
