Rare Silver Kitten Abandoned by Mom Finds Love and Hope

In a heart-tugging rescue story that shows the power of compassion and second chances, a tiny silver kitten named Peggy has gone from abandoned and rejected to adored and thriving. Her journey began in an unlikely place – an abandoned pub – and took her through heartbreak, recovery, and ultimately, adoption into a loving home.

Abandoned and Alone at Birth

Peggy’s story started when her pregnant mother was discovered in a deserted pub alongside 20 other cats. All were swiftly brought into the care of the RSPCA, where Peggy’s mom gave birth to her litter. Unfortunately, just two days after birth, Peggy’s mother, overwhelmed with stress from her traumatic experience, rejected Peggy.

The newborn kitten, now without maternal care, was left struggling and in need of urgent intervention. Rescuers feared the worst, worried that the fragile kitten might not survive without her mother’s warmth and milk. But Peggy had other plans.

A Rescue Angel Steps In

Enter Leanne Booth, an RSPCA inspector who decided to personally foster Peggy. She provided round-the-clock care, bottle-feeding and nurturing the tiny kitten after just 48 hours of life. Under Booth’s devoted attention, the little silver kitten began to grow and thrive.

The Mystery of Peggy’s Silver Coat

When Peggy was born, she was covered in a misty silver-gray coat — a striking feature for any kitten. However, as she grew older, that silver began to fade. It turned out Peggy had a condition known as fever coat, which occurs when a mother experiences illness or extreme stress during pregnancy. This condition alters the pigmentation of a kitten’s fur temporarily.

As the days passed, Peggy’s true color emerged — a sleek, shiny black. The transformation was mesmerizing, but it also raised a concern. Black cats are often more difficult to adopt due to outdated superstitions and lower adoption rates. However, fate had something different in store for Peggy.

A Halloween Homecoming

While working on a campaign to encourage pet adoption, RSPCA team member Cheryl Hague came across Peggy’s story. It captured her heart completely. Just in time for Halloween – a fitting era to adopt a little black cat – Cheryl made Peggy part of her family.

“Her story really pulled on my heartstrings,” Hague said in an interview with The Dodo. From being an abandoned, fading kitten, Peggy was now at home in a place full of love and warmth.

Letting Go for the Greater Good

Though Leanne Booth was sad to see the kitten she had nurtured leave, she found joy in knowing Peggy was going to a friend and loving pet parent.

“It is always sad when a pet you have helped and bonded with has to go,” Booth told The Dodo. “But I now have space to help another poorly puppy or kitten.”

Flourishing in a Forever Home

Today, Peggy is not only surviving – she’s thriving. Described by her adopter as both playful and loving, Peggy has settled perfectly into her new life.

“She is so playful and cute, and we adore her,” said Booth. “It is all thanks to our dedicated staff and carers that she is here.”

Her journey stands as a beautiful reminder of how rescue, rehabilitation, and love can transform lives — even the tiniest ones.
