Rescue Cat’s Love for Chipotle Has the Sweetest Explanation

Most people visit fast food restaurants expecting a delicious meal. But in November 2019, one small kitten wandered into a Chipotle parking lot searching for something much more valuable — a loving home.

Rescued kitten Penny

A Lonely Kitten in Desperate Need

The kitten, later named Penny, was small, sick, and completely alone. For months, she struggled to survive on the streets, but no one seemed to notice her plight. That was until one fateful night, when an animal-loving couple stopped by Chipotle for a meal — and left with a new best friend.

“[She was] a street cat [who] couldn’t even get bystanders to pay attention to help her for over 5 months of her life,” Penny’s rescuers shared on Instagram.

A Warm Burrito Bowl Saves the Day

As soon as the couple spotted Penny hiding in a sewer drain, they knew they couldn’t leave without her. Despite several attempts to coax her out, the scared kitten hesitated — until they brought out a warm burrito bowl filled with cheese. Penny couldn’t resist the delicious smell, and her hunger got the best of her.

Huddled in the freezing cold, she slowly crept out, eagerly nibbling on every piece of food offered to her. The moment she was within reach, Penny’s rescuers scooped her up and rushed her to the vet.

A Life-Saving Rescue

At the veterinary clinic, doctors confirmed Penny was sick and injured, but, fortunately, her ailments were treatable. If not for the couple’s intervention, she may not have survived for much longer.

“[T]he vet said that Penny wouldn’t have lasted more than two weeks outside without human intervention,” her parents wrote on Instagram. “She also said that she could tell that Penny knew I had saved her, and that she would be forever grateful of me.”

A Warm, Loving Home

Penny’s gratitude was evident. Once she arrived at her new home, she quickly adapted, grateful for the warmth, safety, and love she never had before. From a dark, cold sewer to a cozy home, Penny’s life had completely changed.

A Special Tradition

Now, five years later, Penny is a happy, healthy cat who enjoys every moment with her family. But nothing compares to her rescue anniversary, a day that always comes with a special treat.

“Made my lil bestie her own pet-safe Chipotle bowl for the first time ever!” Penny’s rescuers posted on Instagram.

A Love That Started with a Bite

Although she only gets it on special occasions, Penny remains obsessed with Chipotle — as the taste and smell remind her of the moment someone finally cared for her.

Penny’s rescuers may have gone to Chipotle for a meal that evening, but they ended up with something even more valuable — a lifelong companion. And neither they nor Penny would have it any other way.

“It was love at first bite,” Penny’s parents wrote.
