Rescue Dog Loves Living Among 350 Cats at Sanctuary
A Unique Friendship at Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary
At the heart of Faribault, Minnesota, there’s a truly heartwarming scene unfolding at Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary, where over 350 formerly feral felines have found their forever haven. Known for its sprawling “catorium” — a cozy indoor space dedicated to cats — this sanctuary is naturally a cat lover’s paradise.
Introducing Bella — The Cat-Loving Canine
Visitors are often surprised to find a tail-wagging pup curled up among the colonies of cats. Meet Bella, a seven-year-old dog who has seamlessly integrated into the feline family. Bella’s story began when Janis, one of the sanctuary’s directors, adopted her and started bringing her to work. At first, Janis assumed that the dog would need to steer clear of the cat-filled space.
But Bella had other plans.
“Bella cries to come into the sanctuary,” Janis shared.
From Hesitant to Harmonious
Initially, Janis approached the situation cautiously. She allowed Bella to meet the cats slowly, ensuring their comfort and safety. To her pleasant surprise, the feline residents welcomed Bella openly. Many cats now seek her out for warmth and companionship.
“She loves to snuggle with cats, she loves to play with cats,” Janis confirmed. Bella has become something of an honorary feline, winning the trust and affection of dozens of cats.
Bella the Volunteer
The sanctuary staff now lovingly refer to Bella as their “bonus volunteer.” She takes the role seriously, gently herding the cats and even offering them comfort.
“She protects them,” Janis said.
Of course, not every cat is a dog fan, and the staff makes sure to respect that by keeping those felines away. This behavior also provides helpful insight — when a cat becomes adoptable, they already know whether the cat would be suited for a home with dogs.
Learning to Be a Cat
Bella has been such a regular member of the sanctuary that she’s picked up a few cat habits herself:
- She tries to sneak bites of the cats’ food.
- She naps just as often and thoroughly as the cats do.
- She loves lounging on the sanctuary’s heated floors, just like her feline friends.
“Sometimes we think she thinks she’s just one great big cat,” Janis laughed.
A One-of-a-Kind Bond
For most dogs, living with a group of cats — let alone hundreds — isn’t exactly a dream come true. But Bella is no ordinary pup. Her gentle personality and nurturing spirit have made her an invaluable part of the Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary family. Her story is proof that cross-species friendships can be just as strong — and just as heartwarming — as any other.
