For years, pop culture has exaggerated the supposed divide between cats and dogs. But reality sometimes has more charm and surprise than fiction. One remarkable rescue dog, Mako, is turning this age-old stereotype on its head—by deciding he’s not just friends with cats, he’s one of them.
When Bethany Castiller set out to adopt a dog, she had one essential requirement: the dog needed to get along with her two resident cats, Pecan and Gizmo. Her concern was genuine, as not all dogs take kindly to feline companions. However, her search led her to a rescue dog that didn’t just pass the compatibility test—he shattered all expectations.
Describing her first encounter, Bethany shared, “We joke that we didn’t really pick him, he picked us. When we went to the rescue shelter, he had his back against the cage, so we started petting him and he looked over his shoulder and gave direct eye contact—and we just fell in love with the little guy.”
True to the shelter’s promise, Mako instantly bonded with Pecan and Gizmo—not with mere tolerance, but with a deep brotherhood. From the moment he entered their home, Mako began mirroring his feline siblings in a way that was both funny and heartwarming.
Rather than barking, Mako remains quiet. Instead of following Bethany around the way many dogs do, Mako chose to trail his feline siblings. He perched on the countertops, climbed high furniture, and even lounged on the fridge—just like any self-respecting cat would.
His feline transformation wasn’t just behavioral. Mako also developed preferences commonly associated with cats. He favored their favorite spots, adopted their nap schedules, and joined them during their birdwatching sessions at the window. As Bethany puts it, “Whenever Mako sees the boys on the counters or cabinets, he hops up to join them.”
Some of Mako’s habits suggest he may have been raised with cats before ending up at the shelter. Bethany noted that he never barks, a rare trait for dogs, especially those new to a home with cats. Instead, he just follows their lead in nearly every way. Even Pecan and Gizmo seemed content to let Mako integrate completely into their feline duo.
As odd as it may be, Mako’s feline behavior has made for a uniquely harmonious household. Instead of navigating the often tricky cat-dog introduction period, this family simply found themselves with three cats—one of whom happens to bark occasionally and walk on a leash.
- Mako climbs onto furniture, windowsills, and even the refrigerator
- Prefers cat treats and shares nap spots with his feline brothers
- Utterly silent—he doesn’t bark, unlike most dogs
- Has a strong preference for being in the company of cats over people
While most pet owners deal with maintaining harmony between species, Bethany found herself managing a completely different challenge—keeping her dog from becoming too much like his feline housemates. Jokingly, her only concern is that Mako might pick up one of the less desirable cat habits, such as bringing home “gifts” from outside.
Whether it’s perching on the fridge or watching birds from a windowsill, Mako continues to blur the lines between species in the most delightful way. In a world so used to drawing clear distinctions between cats and dogs, this rescue pup is showing us that identity may simply be about who you love—and how high you can climb with them.
