In a world where connections with others can often feel out of reach, rescue pets are proving to be more than just companions; they’re life changers. Meet Jake Woodruff, a musician and artist from Netflix’s “Love on the Spectrum,” whose life took an unexpected turn for the better when he crossed paths with Pablo, a dog he met at a BOBS® from Skechers® adoption event with the Lovejoy Foundation.

“He had such a calm, gentle energy, and something about him just felt right,” Woodruff shared with The Dodo. The connection was immediate, and 19 months later, the pair are inseparable. For Woodruff, who is autistic, Pablo’s presence has helped ease anxiety, encourage social interaction and bring more balance to everyday life.

“Growing up, I sometimes felt like I had to repress parts of my personality to fit in, but Pablo’s playful nature has helped me loosen up and be more present,” Woodruff said. “Emotionally, I feel like my baseline happiness has improved, and I have fewer days where I experience strong anxiety.”

Stories like Woodruff’s are becoming increasingly common across the country as rescue pets change lives in ways their adopters never imagined. BOBS® from Skechers® has facilitated these life-altering connections by supporting animal welfare organizations worldwide. As of this year, the brand has donated over $14 million, helping to support and save over 2 million shelter dogs and cats.

One such heartwarming story is that of Shannan Ajluni and her dog Pixie from Best Friends Animal Society. When Ajluni met Pixie, she discovered an irreplaceable friend who would help her navigate life with Stage 4 cancer.

“When Pixie walked through the door, it was instant love at first sight on both our parts,” Ajluni recalled. Pixie quickly proved to be a special companion, passing various training tests to become Ajluni’s service dog.

For Samantha Bell, Best Friends Animal Society’s cat expert, two rescue cats, Yohan and Desmond, transformed her career. What started as volunteering in a kitten nursery evolved into a life devoted to animal welfare.

Rescue pets are also inspiring creativity. This year’s BOBS® from Skechers® Paws for a Cause Design Scholarship winners, Elle Dalby of Penn State and Anelya Sapar of the School of Visual Arts, turned their experiences with rescue animals into original sneaker designs. Both students were awarded $10,000 scholarships and their winning designs will soon be featured on limited-edition footwear.

Whether it’s a service dog helping people through illness, a loyal companion easing anxiety, or beloved rescue pets inspiring artists and advocates, these pets prove that adoption is about much more than finding homes. It’s about transforming lives, one paw at a time.
