Rescuers Save Kitten Trapped 50 Feet High as Crowd Watches

It was a heart-stopping scene in early January 2025 when the team at Greenpoint Cats received a distress call about a kitten stranded on a narrow ledge of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York City. The tiny black-and-white feline was perched just inches away from oncoming traffic on one side and a 50-foot drop into rush-hour traffic below.

A Desperate Plea for Help

The rescue mission began when a Good Samaritan named Jacob spotted the terrified kitten and urgently contacted Greenpoint Cats. When the rescue team arrived at the expressway, they were shocked by the dire situation. The kitten had been stuck there for nearly six hours, teetering between two extreme dangers.

“It was terrifying to witness and, obviously, even more terrifying for the kitten,” Greenpoint Cats shared in an Instagram post.

A Community Rallies Together

Realizing the immediate danger Perry was in, Greenpoint Cats urgently called for assistance from local law enforcement and firefighters. While waiting, the community began gathering below the highway, preparing for a worst-case scenario in case the kitten fell.

People gathered below the stranded kitten

“So many people showed up by foot, by bike, and by car,” said Becky Wisdom, president of Greenpoint Cats. “Volunteers from Puppy Kitty NYC and many others helped by blocking traffic and setting up a safety net below the cat.”

With so much at stake, the group knew they needed professional help. They soon received it in the form of an NYPD officer from Brooklyn’s 94th Precinct.

A Heroic Rescue

Officer Hernandez arrived on the scene with a well-thought-out strategy. Using a large dog carrier, he carefully positioned it on its side and gently pushed the kitten inside. Within seconds, the kitten, later named Perry, was safely contained.

Not long after her rescue, Perry was already starting to relax. Within two hours, she even allowed her rescuers to rub her belly.

Perry’s Path to Trust and Adoption

Puppy Kitty NYC took Perry in and began searching for a foster home so she could recover. However, as the trauma wore off, Perry reverted to being fearful of humans. She no longer accepted belly rubs and preferred hiding from people.

“Once rescued, Perry remembered she’s a kitten who is very fearful of humans!” Wisdom explained.

Understanding that she needed patience and time, Puppy Kitty NYC connected Perry with Alyssa from Adoptables NYC. Alyssa worked tirelessly to earn Perry’s trust, offering her treats and speaking in a soft, reassuring voice.

“After several offers, she finally decided to try the Churu,” Alyssa shared. “I talk to her in a low voice and give her soft, blinky eyes. I use a back scratcher to pet her gently, and now she’s starting to feel more comfortable.”

Perry’s Transformation and Happy Future

Over time, Perry gradually warmed up to people. She became more receptive to pets and even started purring. Thanks to her patient foster mom, Perry blossomed into a friendly kitten ready for adoption.

“She is doing so well, allowing [people to pet her] and purring,” Meagan from Puppy Kitty NYC confirmed. “[She’s] really ready for a home!”

Now, Perry is officially looking for her forever family. Ideally, she will be adopted into a home with another young cat to keep her company. After everything she’s been through, Perry deserves a loving, safe home where she can continue to thrive.

For now, she enjoys all the love and care she’s receiving from her foster family, forever grateful that so many kind-hearted people came together to save her that fateful January evening.
