Imagine suddenly losing everyone and everything you know. That’s the reality Sunny, a two-year-old retriever mix, has faced since July 2024. After the unexpected death of his beloved owner, Sunny found himself alone and frightened, left at the doors of the Great Plains SPCA in Kansas. What should’ve been just a temporary stop on his way to a new life has become a 100-day wait for a second chance.
“His entire world came crashing down when his owner was tragically killed, leaving him homeless,” the shelter wrote in an emotional Facebook post. Sunny had lived a safe and somewhat sheltered life. From loving companionship to the loud, uncertain world of a shelter kennel, the transition left him confused and grieving.
Gradually, however, Sunny began to show his resilient spirit. Shelter staff and volunteers have gotten to know the real Sunny — not just the scared dog who arrived in July, but the cheerful, affectionate companion he’s becoming again. His profile describes him as “a very happy boy” with a gentle soul and a hearty love for life.
For a brief time, there was hope. Sunny spent several days in a foster home where he thrived. The family described him as a “fabulous dog, calm and well-behaved.” Unfortunately, this temporary happiness came to an abrupt end when one of the children in the household developed a dog allergy. “We are devoted to waiting however long it takes for Sunny to find his people, but it truly breaks our hearts,” the staff shared. Time stretches on, but Sunny continues to greet each day with hope, his tail wagging for anyone offering a kind word or a loving touch.
