What started as a standard roadside cleanup operation quickly turned into a heartwarming rescue effort when Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) workers stumbled upon a surprising discovery. While removing a fallen tree along the roadside, team members found four tiny black kittens tangled in a thick briar patch, their helpless faces peeking through the thorny brush.

The kittens were in distress, ensnared by branches and unable to wriggle free on their own. With their mother nowhere in sight and survival uncertain, the RIDOT crew knew they had to act fast. Without maternal care, kittens this young face serious risks. According to the Animal Humane Society, mother cats are essential for nursing, warmth, and the teaching of vital life skills for at least the first 8 to 12 weeks of a kitten’s life.

Displaying both care and courage, members of the maintenance team gently trimmed away the intruding branches, ensuring no harm came to the fragile animals during the process. “[They] are doing well,” confirmed Charles St. Martin, RIDOT’s Chief of Public Affairs. “[They’re] a little young to be adopted, but are in good care now.”
