Senior Dog Rescued After Spotted Alone in Highway Tunnel
Meet Monkey: A 13-Year-Old Cat With an Incredible Story
On a seemingly ordinary commute between New York and Massachusetts, a couple spotted something unusual near a busy highway—a lone cat hovering near a drain culvert. That cat, later named Monkey, was soon discovered to be a sweet senior feline whose life was at risk along a bustling interstate.
Initial Rescue Attempts: A Game of Hide and Seek
Intent on helping, the couple pulled over and attempted to bring the frightened cat to safety. However, Monkey bolted, dashing deep into a dark tunnel beneath the highway—making it clear he was not going to be easy to rescue.
Realizing they needed expert help, the couple contacted several local rescue organizations, including Protectors of Animals, a nonprofit animal welfare group. Before long, Lisa DiBenedetto, head of the organization’s Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) team, was en route to the scene.
A Difficult Beginning
On her first visit, DiBenedetto searched the area thoroughly. But the signs were discouraging: no visible food sources, no shelter, and a constant flow of loud traffic. “We were discouraged,” DiBenedetto told The Dodo. “We felt the chances were slim.”
A Spark of Hope
Undeterred, DiBenedetto returned with her husband and set a humane trap near the culvert, hoping for a miracle. Their perseverance paid off. When they checked the trap later, Monkey was safely inside.
“We couldn’t believe it,” said DiBenedetto. Their relief was immediate—the high-risk rescue mission had succeeded, and Monkey was finally safe.
Adjusting to Safety and Love
Once back at DiBenedetto’s home, Monkey showed his true colors. He settled into a cozy dog crate and surprised his rescuers with his calm demeanor. “He remained calm overall and seemed genuinely relieved once he was secured,” DiBenedetto explained.
Monkey showed signs that he had once lived indoors. He immediately curled up in a soft bed and responded lovingly to human touch, further evidence that he wasn’t a feral cat but likely someone’s lost or abandoned pet.
Next Steps: A New Journey for Monkey
Now safe and in the care of a dedicated foster mom, Monkey is receiving the veterinary attention he needs. At 13 years old, he’s entering his golden years but still has so much love to give. Once healthy, he’ll be made available for adoption and will begin searching for a forever home that can provide the warmth, safety, and companionship he deserves.
