Senior Three-Legged Cat Rescued From Storm Drain Surprises Rescuer

A Mysterious Visitor From the Storm Drain

A few months ago, Arizona resident Caitlyn Clarke noticed a stray cat dart through her backyard. The cat quickly vanished, and Clarke assumed that would be the end of their brief encounter. But fate had something very different in store.

Shortly after the sighting, Clarke and her mom began hearing persistent meows coming from the storm drain outside their home. Curious and concerned, they went to investigate and spotted a cat peeking out from inside the drain — wide-eyed, cautious, and clearly hiding rather than stuck.

This heartbreaking image of a scared feline struck a chord with Clarke, who spent multiple nights trying to coax the cat to safety. “At night, I would sit out here in … the middle of the cul-de-sac for like, two hours,” she told The Dodo.

An Unexpected Discovery

As she was working to gain his trust, Clarke noticed something extraordinary about the cat—he had only three legs.

“I didn’t even know he had three legs for a few days because he hadn’t walked past me, he’d been in the drain,” Clarke said. “And so the first time he came out, I was like, ‘Oh my God, he has three legs.’”

A Rainy Welcome Home

During a sudden Arizona monsoon storm, the cat finally made his move. Soaked to the bone, he appeared at Clarke’s doorstep, ready to take refuge. Her mom welcomed him inside, offering food, water, and a comfortable bed to rest.

Clarke had been sharing updates on local networks like Facebook and Nextdoor, but no one claimed the lost feline. Eventually, they discovered he was microchipped — and the contact information was still active.

The Cat’s Past Life Revealed

Upon contacting the number linked to the microchip, Clarke uncovered a remarkable history. The cat, named Bambino, had been rescued as a kitten by a man named David, who took him to a veterinarian to amputate an infected leg.

To Clarke’s surprise, this rescue occurred 14 years ago.

“We thought this cat was, like, 5,” Clarke said. “We had no idea he was 14.”

David had cared for Bambino for seven years before entrusting him to a neighbor. Somewhere along the line, Bambino was either lost or abandoned — which led him to Clarke’s storm drain.

Forever Home and a Fresh Start

When David heard that Bambino had found his way to caring hands, he was incredibly grateful. He even offered to help cover Bambino’s food and medical bills. For Clarke, making Bambino a permanent member of the household wasn’t even a question.

  • He quickly adjusted to his new home with affection and ease.
  • He enjoys long naps, cozy corners, and above all, snuggles.
  • He’s especially affectionate during early mornings and evenings.

“In the evenings and early mornings … he’s up on my bed and he wants snuggles and pets, and he does the very classic cat headbutting and pawing at me,” Clarke said.

What started as a random backyard encounter evolved into a heartwarming rescue story — unexpected and unforgettable.

A Life-Changing Surprise

Clarke never imagined that an elderly, three-legged cat would end up changing her life. “I’ve been saying for years now that I want a cat of my own,” she said. “So I’m glad that I just had a random cat show up, because I didn’t get to think about if it was the right time or not. I just have a cat now.”
