Across the United States, a heartening transformation is taking place within animal shelters. A newfound hope is spreading as thousands of rescue cats and dogs are embarking on journeys to new homes. This is a significant change from the overcrowded conditions and precarious futures many of these animals faced in the past. According to new data from Best Friends Animal Society, 2025 marked a breakthrough year for animal welfare, with noticeably fewer pets facing euthanasia due to space constraints.
Compared to 2024, the U.S. witnessed approximately 34,000 fewer shelter euthanasias, marking the largest year-over-year decline since 2020. This accomplishment represents more than just numbers; it embodies the lives of countless animals who found themselves stepping into loving homes, thanks to the dedication of animal advocates and rescue workers.
Milestones in Animal Welfare
In 2025, close to 4 million shelter pets found homes, bringing the nation nearer to the “no-kill” goal, which is defined as saving at least 90% of animals entering shelters. The numbers signify frightened puppies and shy cats leaving shelter confinements for the warmth of family homes and the care they so desperately needed.
From the data, we also learned that by 2025, more than two-thirds of all shelters in the United States achieved no-kill status. This progress is mainly credited to the dedicated work of rescue teams, foster families, veterinarians, and volunteers. Thanks to these efforts, only a small percentage of animals entering shelters — those with severe medical or behavioral challenges — could not be rehomed.
Cats and Dogs Among Top Beneficiaries
Dog euthanasia rates dropped by 8.5% from 2024 to 2025, sparing the lives of approximately 20,000 dogs. For cats, 83% entering shelters in 2025 were saved, and the number of euthanized cats was the lowest since data tracking began. Such progress is remarkable and reflects the dedicated initiatives of community cat programs, which support spaying and neutering, and thereby reduce shelter intakes.
Community participation has also been invaluable. The younger demographic, in particular, showed a growing interest in pet adoptions, providing homes to rescued animals and creating the much-needed space in shelters for other animals in need.
