Meet Katpone: The Christmas Stray Who Stole Hearts with His Mob Boss Looks
On Christmas Day, the staff at Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters in East Cobb, Georgia, received an unexpected—yet thoroughly heart-melting—gift. From the moment the shelter team laid eyes on a new stray cat, they knew he was no ordinary feline. Towering at 15 pounds with a face that whispered “mob boss,” this chonky tabby was christened Katpone by staff, and he has since become an internet sensation.
Furkids introduced the cat on Facebook as “15 pounds of pure street cred” and marvelously quipped that he had “the jowls of a mob boss.” His round, commanding face made him seem older than his estimated 4-5 years of age. The shelter staff joked, “He looks like the type of cat to settle disputes behind a dumpster and come out on top every time.”
Understanding the Mob Boss Jowls
Katpone’s striking cheeks weren’t just for comedic effect—they’re a hallmark of tomcats who have spent years surviving without being neutered. Furkids explained that un-neutered male cats produce high levels of testosterone, which causes the thickening of skin and muscles around their face. This physiological feature helps signal dominance and provides protection during feline altercations.
Despite his tough exterior, Katpone’s condition was a reminder of a life spent battling the elements. Not only was he un-neutered, but he also arrived at the shelter with several health concerns:
- Tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
- Suffered from an upper respiratory infection
- Had visible damage to his ears, likely from mites or previous fights
“His ears are a little wonky, most likely due to ear mites and some scuffles he probably had with other cats in the neighborhood!” Furkids shared in a Facebook comment. But even with all his street-worn features, Katpone had one thing that shocked them all: a heart of gold.
From Street King to Shelter Sweetheart
According to Karlie Lucas, Furkids’ social media specialist, Katpone was unexpectedly sweet. “He is an incredibly sweet cat despite his mean mug face!” she told animal nonprofit The Dodo. And he didn’t take long to warm up to the comforts of indoor shelter life—staff affectionately joked he was already “running the place.”
Thanks to good care and a warm place to call home, Katpone’s health has significantly improved. His infections are being safely treated, and he’s showing daily signs of energy, affection, and personality. Soon, he’ll be ready to be adopted into the kind of home he never had while surviving on the streets.
The Future for Katpone
Though Katpone might have started life fending off foes in alleyways and dumpsters, his days of scrapping for food and sleeping cold are behind him. The Furkids team is committed to finding him the perfect forever home—a well-deserved ending for a cat who’s become both an internet star and a shelter favorite.
“We’re so happy we crossed paths with this fella,” Furkids posted. “And we will find him the best home.” Until then, Katpone will continue ruling the shelter with his trademark stare and lovable nature—proving that behind the jowls of a mob boss beats the heart of a gentle giant.
