John Weston, a man experiencing the challenges of Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), found immense solace in the companionship of his rescue dog, Pawpaw. As his condition worsened, Weston faced the heartbreaking task of rehoming his beloved pet.

His neighbor, Sherri Franklin, founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, had placed Pawpaw with Weston three years earlier. She had promised to assist if circumstances impeded his ability to care for the dog. That moment had arrived.

Sherri Franklin was determined to honor Weston’s wishes and ensure both he and Pawpaw were well cared for. A call went out from Muttville for potential adopters, with the critical requirement that they meet Weston first. This was more than just a rehoming effort; it was essential to acknowledge how vital Pawpaw was to Weston.

“John and Pawpaw are constant companions. PawPaw is always next to John and he sleeps on his dog bed right next to John’s bed.”

Everything changed when Bernie Knobbe, visiting San Francisco for work, saw the social media posts about John and Pawpaw. Alongside his husband, Tim Belavich, Knobbe was already experienced in rescuing senior dogs, and he felt drawn to meet the duo.

The meeting with Weston and Pawpaw proved to be emotional, with Weston expressing his approval by touching Knobbe’s arm and reassuring him, “You’re a good guy. This is good.” The connection was instant, and everyone in the room understood the poignancy of the moment; it was as if Weston was finally at peace.

“I think he met the right person and he could finally let go. John left this world happier.”

Three days later, Weston passed away. Franklin believed that during his final days, knowing Pawpaw was in the right hands provided him comfort and closure.

Since then, Pawpaw has thrived with Knobbe and Belavich, joining their previous rescues from Muttville, Henry, and Ella. However, life wasn’t without its challenges; five weeks later, Pawpaw was diagnosed with megaesophagus.

Pawpaw now enjoys meals upright in his Bailey chair, giving the appearance of being at a bar. Knobbe humorously remarks on Pawpaw’s setup, chuckling about his pet’s look of perpetual cheer.

Despite the obstacles Pawpaw faces, his new family embraces the rewards and joys of caring for a senior dog. Belavich states, “Pawpaw spent a lot of his life taking care of others. So now it’s time for Pawpaw to be taken care of.” Their commitment to providing for Pawpaw is as strong as their admiration for the joy and love he continues to bring into their lives, fulfilling their promise to John Weston.
