Texas Heroes Save Hundreds of Stranded Animals Amid Devastating Floods
In mid-July, Central Texas was struck by severe flooding, impacting thousands of residents and displacing countless pets. Amidst the chaos, countless animals were left behind as families were forced to evacuate. Rescuers from Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) quickly mobilized to tackle this dire situation.
Swift Response from APA!
After learning about a nearby neighborhood affected by the flooding, APA! rescuers ventured into the area, which had already been closed off for safety reasons. With assistance from the local fire department, they navigated into the zone, working diligently to rescue as many pets as possible from the rising waters.
Over a strenuous three-hour period, the team tirelessly searched and saved every animal they discovered. They came across dogs in partially submerged kennels and a kitten trapped in a birdcage inside a flooded shed. The rescuers used their arms, wheelbarrows, and any other equipment they could muster to transport the animals to safety swiftly.
Reuniting Families with Their Pets
Once all the animals in the affected neighborhoods were safe, APA! turned its focus to reuniting these strayed pets with their displaced families. This process can be lengthy, but it is essential for the well-being of both the pets and their owners.
In the aftermath of the floods, APA! has been collaborating with local shelters to absorb as many animals as possible, making room for lost pets that might arrive imminently. However, shelter space is limited.
Preventing Shelter Overcrowding
Dr. Ellen Jefferson, the president and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!, highlighted the urgency of the situation: “When disaster hits like this, government shelters can see ten times their normal number of lost pets come through the door, and animals already past their stray hold are often euthanized just to make room. We’re here to pull those animals to safety before that happens.”
APA!’s team is actively working alongside families, assisting those in distress. They recently accepted a litter of puppies from a family that lost everything in the floods and can no longer provide for them.
Ongoing Efforts to Aid Flood Victims
Since the onset of flooding, APA! has taken in more than 270 animals and remains steadfast in providing every form of support possible to those in need. Dr. Jefferson emphasized their commitment: “We don’t yet know the full extent of the devastation in these communities, but we know their shelters are being pushed past their limits, and we’re not going to stop until we’ve done everything we can.”
