Tiny Fluffball Rescued From Perilous Spot on Highway Ledge

A Scary Sight on the Freeway in Phoenix

Last month in Phoenix, Arizona, a vigilant driver witnessed something heart-wrenching on the side of a freeway transition ramp — a tiny kitten sitting alone and motionless. Concerned for the kitten’s well-being, the passerby immediately contacted the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for help.

Emergency Response Made With Care

ADOT quickly dispatched two dedicated members of their incident response unit, Travis Benthin and Derik Woitaszewski, to investigate the report. When the pair arrived, they were relieved to find the kitten still alive and mobile. However, the little feline had managed to place herself in an even more dangerous position.

Kitten perched on freeway ramp ledge

During the brief time it took for help to arrive, the kitten had climbed onto the narrow ledge of the transition ramp, nearly 100 feet above a busy highway. Any misstep could have been fatal.

Planning a Gentle Rescue

Benthin and Woitaszewski knew they had to proceed cautiously to avoid frightening the kitten and causing a tragic fall. As Benthin inched his way closer, the kitten began to hiss in fear. Realizing her fear may have been triggered by his bright safety jacket, Benthin made a quick decision to turn his raincoat inside out to dull the appearance.

“The kitten was fearful and hissed at Travis as he moved closer,” said Julian Lopez, ADOT’s public information officer. “So he turned his raincoat inside out so the kitten would not be scared by the bright and shiny colors.”

A Close Call and a Successful Rescue

Despite the thoughtful gesture, the kitten remained visibly disoriented and frightened. As Benthin got closer to attempt the rescue, the kitten made a sudden move nearly sending her off the ledge. In a moment of quick reflex, he was able to safely grab the kitten just in time.

“It hissed at me and I reached out with my left hand and put my right arm around it,” Benthin recalled in an ADOT Facebook post. “It started to jump off [the ledge] and I was able to grab it.”

A New Beginning for “ADOT”

Once safely secured in a carrier, the responders could finally take a moment to admire the kitten’s appearance and spirit. “It was a gorgeous cat,” Benthin noted, clearly moved by the rescue.

They transported the kitten to Heidi’s Village, a local Phoenix animal rescue organization. The shelter took her in and provided necessary medical care and a comforting space to decompress from the traumatic experience.

In commemoration of her brave rescue, the shelter lovingly named her ADOT.

ADOT’s Recovery and Bright Future

ADOT has since been healing and growing more confident each day. According to Lori Wahl, development director at Heidi’s Village, she has blossomed into a sweet and affectionate kitten.

“The nursery team was raving about how sweet she has become,” Wahl shared. Now approximately 9 weeks old, ADOT is preparing to be placed for adoption in the coming week. With a second chance at life and a loving personality, her days of danger on a freeway ledge are soon to be nothing more than a memory.
