Tsunami, an extraordinary Border Collie, was recently honored with a statue in a park in Venezuela. While the dog himself remained blissfully unaware that he was the star of the gathering, the people celebrating around him fully understood why he deserved such recognition. Over the years, Tsunami has deployed to numerous disaster zones, searching tirelessly for survivors, and his heroic efforts have saved lives.

Tsunami’s most recent mission came in June 2026, when powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela. With astounding dedication, he helped rescue teams locate 26 people buried beneath the rubble. At nine years old, he has now been immortalized in bronze, forever commemorating his selfless contributions to humanity.

Before Tsunami Saved Lives, He Was Saved Himself

Tsunami’s journey to becoming a search-and-rescue hero was far from ordinary. In 2017, as a helpless puppy, he was rescued from living in poor conditions. It wasn’t long before Jorge Beens, the founder of a canine disaster-response training organization, recognized Tsunami’s potential and gave him the chance to turn his life around.

Under Beens’ expert guidance, Tsunami was trained to navigate the chaos of disaster zones. His incredible sense of smell enabled him to be a beacon of hope for many, locating and alerting rescuers to trapped individuals under debris.

Training to Triumph

Search-and-rescue dogs hold capabilities even advanced technology can’t replicate. With a keen sense of smell, these dogs are invaluable in narrowing down locations in challenging disaster scenes. Tsunami was trained rigorously in these skills, learning to traverse fragile rubble and alert his handler to human presence beneath.

Over the years, Tsunami’s skills took him to international missions, including the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. He stayed active in his home country as well, assisting in the aftermath of the 2022 Venezuela mudslides. His work at each site magnified his importance during the 2026 Venezuelan earthquakes, where he was an experienced search dog by then.

Earthquake Heroics

On June 24, 2026, when Venezuela was rocked by earthquakes, Tsunami and Beens sprang into action. The U.S. Geological Survey chronicled the event’s timeline, noting Tsunami’s role in finding survivors amid the chaos. This included a particularly poignant moment when Tsunami led rescuers to a man in his 60s buried alive in Caracas.

Each rescue mission showcased Tsunami’s unique talent, helping to locate over 26 survivors in multiple regions, including Caracas and La Guaira. For those staring into the void, Tsunami’s work was nothing short of miraculous.

A Lifelong Tribute

In recognition of his valiant efforts, a statue honoring Tsunami was unveiled at Vereda del Lago park in Maracaibo, Venezuela on September 17, 2026. This public monument celebrates Tsunami’s role as a symbol of hope during a national crisis.

Retirement and Legacy

While Tsunami continues to bask in the affection of those who love him, his handler, Jorge Beens, has confirmed that Tsunami’s deployment during the 2026 earthquakes would be his last. The decision wasn’t due to fading capabilities, but rather to give Tsunami a well-deserved retirement after years of service.

Now, Tsunami will enjoy a life filled with love, comfort, and treats. His statue in Maracaibo will serve as an eternal testament to the canine hero who once needed rescuing but spent his life saving others.

Whether sniffing through debris or standing proudly beside his bronze likeness, Tsunami’s legacy is a tale of redemption, bravery, and sacrifice that will inspire for generations to come.
