Skyler and his partner, Nikka, embarked on what they thought would be a simple late-evening movie outing. After the film ended around midnight, both felt a hunger pang that could only be satisfied with some delicious tacos. “Nikka really wanted to get tacos,” Skyler recounted to The Dodo.
Their journey to fulfill this craving, however, was cut short upon realizing that the bus they needed was nearing its last run for the night. Instead of disappointment, a new path was carved, leading them to a local gas station minimart for some quick snacks.
A Stray Surprise
As the couple approached the gas station, they were met with an unexpected sight. A round black and white cat, with big curious eyes, was sitting by the entrance. “She just sat there staring at us,” Skyler recalled. Contrary to his expectations, the cat welcomed his gentle affection.
Upon closer inspection, Skyler noted that the cat seemed pregnant. He learned from the gas station staff and locals that this endearing feline was a temporary guest, sustained by the kindness of passing patrons but lacking a permanent home.
An Unplanned Rescue
Motivated by the cat’s friendly nature, Skyler and Nikka decided to take her home for the night, intending to visit a vet the following morning. Once they arrived at their apartment, they bathed the cat and made a cozy bed for her. Skyler checked in regularly to ensure her comfort.
Shortly afterward, Skyler was greeted by an unexpected sight: the cat was in labor. “I looked in to see two little heads poking out,” he exclaimed. The homebound visitor gave birth to seven healthy kittens over the next few hours.
New Beginnings
The event was shared in real-time on the subreddit r/TrojanCats, where the story’s serendipity inspired users to name the cat Taco—in homage to the quest that led to her discovery. “We’ve been calling them Taco and her 7 Seasonings,” Skyler said.
Skyler and Nikka, still in awe of how a change in plans led to an unexpected family, reflected on the experience as a stroke of perfect timing. “If the bus schedule had been a little different, we would have gone to get tacos instead of going to the gas station,” Skyler mused.
Dedicated to ensuring a better future for Taco and her kittens, the couple plans to care for the little ones until they are ready to be adopted into loving homes. As for Taco, she has found her forever home with Skyler, Nikka, and one of her adorable “seasonings.”
