Ludivine the Bloodhound

Most dogs who slip away from home might spend their unexpected freedom exploring a neighbor’s yard, chasing an interesting smell, or wandering down a familiar road. But Ludivine, a sweet and adventurous Bloodhound from Alabama, stumbled into an experience nobody could have predicted. After wandering away from home, she somehow found herself surrounded by runners gathering for a half-marathon. Instead of turning around or simply watching from the sidelines, the curious 2-year-old dog joined the crowd and started running, beginning an unforgettable 13.1-mile adventure that would soon capture hearts far beyond her small community.

No one had entered her in the race. She had not trained for it, either. But once the runners started moving, Ludivine apparently decided she belonged with them. And by the time the morning was over, this curious Bloodhound had accomplished something remarkable.

An Unexpected Runner Joins the Race

When April Hamlin, Ludivine’s owner, learned where her dog had gone, relief came first. Ludivine was safe and probably having the time of her life. Friends attending the race texted her updates, calming her worries. Hamlin was initially concerned that Ludivine might disrupt the runners who had meticulously trained. Nevertheless, Ludivine appeared more interested in participating than causing any interruptions.

Once the race began, she took off alongside the human runners. Photographer Gregg Gelmis, founder of the regional running group We Run Huntsville, captured much of Ludivine’s spontaneous journey.

Ludivine was astonishingly quick. At the half-mile point, she was reportedly running in second place. This unplanned runner began her adventure looking like a serious competitor. Of course, true to her Bloodhound nature, she couldn’t resist the distractions along the way.

  • Stopping to investigate a roadkill rabbit
  • Taking a detour to drink from a creek
  • Pausing for bathroom breaks
  • Checking out mules and cows
  • Despite these distractions, nothing could convince Ludivine that her journey was complete. At the eight-mile aid station, she had slipped to fourth place but was still going strong. Ludivine’s easily distracted personality was precisely why she hadn’t succeeded in her original purpose as a tracking dog.

    Ludivine Completes the Race

Throughout the race, Ludivine delighted in running alongside the participants. She trailed along the course with no owner beckoning her home or treats urging her on. Instead, she was content simply to be with her newfound companions.

Out of 165 human runners, Ludivine unofficially finished in seventh place with an impressive time of 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 56 seconds. Tim Horvath, a fellow runner, recalled volunteers being amazed that she had completed the entire race.

For Hamlin, Ludivine’s performance was nothing short of astonishing. The race organizers ensured her achievement did not go unrecognized, awarding her a participation medal. After her remarkable efforts, Ludivine cozied up and fell asleep, her new medal gleaming beside her.

Ludivine’s story quickly spread beyond her Alabama town. While some criticism arose over her escape, those who knew her understood: she was a cherished family pet who followed her nose and made friends. Gelmis mentioned the possibility of naming the next year’s race the “Hounddog Half” and creating a special award for the seventh-place finisher.

Ludivine likely didn’t understand rankings or medals, yet she managed an unforgettable feat. Her journey through unexpected detours, companionship, and curiosity made this race a story impossible to replicate.
