When Vietnam veteran James Pack suffered a heart attack, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. During his extended treatment and recovery, he faced the unthinkable—being separated from his two beloved dogs, Bailey and Blaze. Thankfully, the First State Animal Center and SPCA, located inside a PetSmart in Newark, Delaware, took in the pups temporarily, keeping them safe until James’s recovery.

James remained hospitalized far longer than anyone had anticipated. When he was finally well enough to return to the shelter and retrieve Bailey and Blaze, he was greeted with disheartening news. Due to the shelter’s policy and the passage of time, the dogs had officially been placed up for adoption.
Although Bailey and Blaze had not yet been adopted and were still available, James faced another roadblock—he could not afford the $250 adoption fee required to reclaim them. During his time in the hospital, he had spent his entire life savings on medical treatment and living expenses, leaving him financially stranded and emotionally overwhelmed.

In a last-ditch effort to reunite with his loyal companions, James made a heartbreaking decision: he would sell his car to raise the money. For James, these dogs were not just pets—they were family, and family was worth any sacrifice. As word of his situation spread among the shelter staff, they refused to let him go through with it.
Touched by James’s story and the evident bond he shared with Bailey and Blaze, the shelter staff took it upon themselves to help. In an incredible act of kindness, each team member contributed what they could—$5 to $10 each—until they had enough to cover the adoption fee.

The heartwarming surprise came on the day James arrived to once again plead for his dogs. Unaware of what had been done for him, he walked into the shelter, still prepared to give away the last of his possessions. As a staff member shared the news—they had already paid the adoption fees—James broke down in tears.
