Woman Builds Dog Train for Disabled Dogs in Turkey

Deep in Turkey, a remarkable woman named Buket Özgünlü has changed hundreds of lives—not just canine, but human as well—with her compassion and ingenuity. Through her nonprofit organization, the Paws Holding on to Life Association, she has created a sanctuary for 560 stray dogs, many of whom are paralyzed, abused, or abandoned. Her latest creation—a “dog train”—is a rolling symbol of joy and freedom for animals who once knew only hardship.

Buket Özgünlü’s journey into animal rescue began with empathy rooted in personal experience. With a disabled father, she grew up with an innate understanding of the challenges faced by those who depend on others for care. When she saw disabled and injured dogs struggling on the streets of Turkey, she knew she had to help.

“They need us more,” Özgünlü said. And so, she began welcoming them into her sanctuary, ensuring each dog receives the attention and medical care they need to survive—and thrive.

Many of the dogs she cares for have profound disabilities:

  • Paralyzed hind legs requiring wheelchairs
  • Victims of abuse and neglect
  • Dogs suffering from gunshot wounds or beatings

Despite these tragic beginnings, life at the sanctuary is full of love, safety, and stimulation. But Buket dreamed of giving them more—an adventure that allowed them to feel alive beyond the walls of their shelter. That dream materialized into a brilliantly engineered “dog train.”

Using a tractor and several recycled barrels, Buket constructed a dog-friendly train. Each barrel was customized with wheels and openings large enough to safely carry a dog. Together, they form a colorful caravan that brings joy to dozens of dogs per trip. It’s not just a ride; it’s a taste of freedom.

As the train rolls through the local countryside, these once-forgotten dogs get to experience the world again—feeling the wind, smelling fresh air, and watching birds fly by. Their tails wag, eyes sparkle, and ears perk up. For many of them, it’s their first real adventure.

Özgünlü said the idea had been on her mind for some time. “I’d actually been thinking about doing such a project for a long time,” she explained. “I was very happy that I did.” The emotional payoff is clear in the dogs’ joyful expressions and the response from the local community.

As the dog train passes through nearby towns and roads, people wave and cheer. Children run alongside, and passersby stop to take pictures. The sight of dozens of happy, recuperating dogs sharing a joyful ride strikes a chord with everyone fortunate enough to witness it.

The dog train has done more than just give these animals a fun experience—it has transformed how people view stray and disabled animals. It serves as a rolling message of hope, love, and second chances.

Buket’s devotion runs deep. Her understanding of the emotional lives of her animals—especially the disabled ones—is what keeps her motivated. “I know very well how much they need it,” she said of the dog train experience.

Through her creativity, empathy, and relentless dedication, Buket Özgünlü has proven that the possibilities of healing and happiness stretch beyond survival. For her dogs, each ride aboard the train brings a new chapter—filled with dignity, love, and a well-deserved taste of freedom.
