Xylitol Poisoning Kills Dog: Pet Owner Issues Urgent Warning

A heartbroken pet owner from Wisconsin is speaking out after the tragic and avoidable death of her beloved 2-year-old Golden Retriever named Luna. Samantha Carress and her family were devastated when Luna suddenly collapsed and showed signs of acute liver failure. The culprit? A seemingly harmless household product that claimed the life of their dog: Xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly found in various sugar-free and reduced-sugar human products. Unknown to many pet owners, this ingredient is highly toxic to dogs, even in small quantities. • Peanut and nut butters
• Drink powders and flavored waters
• Candy and pudding
• Condiments like ketchup and barbecue sauce

After ingesting the gum, Luna quickly succumbed to xylitol poisoning. Samantha and her spouse sought emergency veterinary care, only to learn that Luna’s liver function had rapidly declined, leaving her with virtually no chance of survival without immediate and intensive treatment. The emergency procedure would have cost nearly $20,000—an amount the family simply couldn’t afford at the time. Left with no other choice, they made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to their beloved pet.

Still mourning the loss of Luna, Samantha has turned her grief into action. She now checks every label on products she brings home and refuses to purchase anything that includes xylitol. “I just had no idea something so common could be so deadly,” she admitted. Safety experts warn that incidents of xylitol poisoning in dogs have skyrocketed by over 3,000% in the past decade, making pet education more urgent than ever.
