Yuji the Adorable Baby Monkey Steals Hearts with Teddy Companion
In the early days of life when a mother’s touch is crucial, Yuji, a young patas monkey residing in a zoo in Mexico, has found solace in an unlikely companion — a plush toy. He was born on March 3, and soon after birth, he clung to the comforting texture of a stuffed dog, a gesture signifying both resilience and the need for comfort in the absence of maternal care.
Yuji’s Early Struggles
At just six weeks of age and weighing only 673 grams, Yuji’s tender beginning faced challenges when his mother, Kamaria, a first-time mom, showed erratic behavior post-birth, leaving Yuji unable to secure the essential maternal support necessary for his survival. Without human intervention, Yuji faced life-threatening risks. He was quickly transferred to the Guadalajara Zoo’s Comprehensive Center for Animal Medicine and Welfare (CIMBA), where he received the care critical to stabilizing his body temperature and ensuring his survival.
The Role of the Stuffed Toy
In the absence of his mother, Yuji’s caregivers ensured he always had a comforting presence. The stuffed dog became vital in replicating the touch and warmth a real mother would offer.
Caring Hands at CIMBA
A team of 12 dedicated veterinarians and biologists at CIMBA took over nurturing Yuji. They provided him round-the-clock nourishment through bottle feeding with fortified milk and maintained constant monitoring of his health. They ensured his emotional security by rotating between three plush toys — a dog, a bear, and a monkey — helping Yuji grasp a semblance of safety and normalcy in an otherwise foreign world.
Signs of Progress
Yuji’s journey of resilience is marked by small but hopeful strides. Over time, he gained weight, increasing his feedings to four bottles a day, starting each morning at 7:00 AM. Caregivers also enhanced his environment with simple enrichments, such as a hammock and ropes, encouraging natural movement and strength-building.
A Brighter Tomorrow
Yuji’s future includes eventual integration into a shared habitat with other patas monkeys once he is strong enough and transitions to a diet of fruits and vegetables. This step is critical for his social development and is anticipated around six months of age.
